Josip Stiller was an architect, urban planner and a visionary whose legacy are unique Karlovac panoramas. He was of Czech origin, but not much is known about his life before his arrival to Karlovac. He came here as a young man, started his career as a construction foreman, then became a fortifications expert, worked as a consul, a magistrate, and judge’s deputy, thus becoming a highly respected citizen. His style is reflected in the old Town Hall renovation, but he also designed and built many town houses, constructed the extension to the Franciscan monastery and started the construction of the Dubovac hospital. He expanded the Church of the Holy Trinity, added a whole floor to the bell tower and started the renovation of the fire station.
