Irish Heritage at Dubovac

Ahead of St. Patrick’s Day, Karlovac City Museums, in collaboration with the Irish National Monuments Service and the Embassy of Ireland, are honored to announce the opening of the photography exhibition “Celebrating the Archaeological Heritage of Ireland,” which will be held on Friday, March 14, 2025, at 11:00 AM at Dubovac Castle.

The exhibition features a selection of around thirty of Ireland’s most important archaeological sites, landscapes, and historic buildings, which testify to nearly 12,000 years of human settlement on the island. Through the lens of the author Michael MacDonagh, visitors will have the opportunity to explore exceptional archaeological sites, including the prehistoric passage tomb complex at Newgrange, famous for its spectacular light phenomenon during the winter solstice, as well as picturesque castles and remote monastic hermitages, many of which have also served as backdrops for internationally renowned film productions.

This exhibition is not only a visual journey through Ireland’s rich past but also a valuable conservation record that contributes to the protection and preservation of European and world cultural heritage. Through carefully selected photographs, the author conveys the message about the importance of preserving archaeological sites for future generations.

On St. Patrick’s Day, Monday, March 17, which the Karlovac City Museums commemorate in memory of the former owner Laval Nugent, the working hours of Dubovac Castle will be from 3 PM to 9 PM. To celebrate this Irish national holiday, the Castle will be illuminated in Ireland’s green color, creating a unique atmosphere. For the fastest adult visitors, we have provided a special Irish souvenir.

On St. Joseph’s Day in Karlovac, the patron saint of the Republic of Croatia, Wednesday, March 19, Dubovac Castle will be illuminated in the colors of the Croatian flag. All visitors will have the opportunity to explore all the exhibits for free with the purchase of a souvenir, aiming to further highlight the importance of this holiday and promote cultural heritage. The working hours will be extended until 9 PM.

The program is co-financed by the funds of the Karlovac Tourist Board.

We look forward to your visit!
