The Green Route

The Green Tourist Route is the most natural choice for a guided tour through Karlovac. You’ll get to know the town of parks in the green light of the old allee canopies with a whiff of the glorious past. The Green Route is ideal for all age groups. You can choose a shorter or a longer version, learn to distinguish the types of trees and check out all the inhabitants of the Karlovac trees and parks. Or you can just let go and relax during this anti-stress route.

When it comes to the guided tours through the town’s green ring, you can choose between the one-hour or two-hour walks. You’ll get to know these Karlovac parks and allees, in that particular order:

  1. The Great Promenade
  2. The Park with the Radoslav Lopašić statue
  3. The Modrušan Park
  4. The Moat Parks
  5. The Park with the Vjekoslav Karas statue
  6. The Cadet School Park (‘Vojna bašta’)
  7. The Gloriette
  8. The Katzler Pavilion

The rest of the Green Route includes the Korana river, the Vrbanić Gardens, the Forestry and Carpentry School Arboretum, and the Kupa river. Enjoy your walk as we will!

Sometimes, one wishes to delve more deeply into exploring the town, get away from the everyday hustle and bustle. After all the glittery and sprightly tourist routes, it is time for a quiet walk and the world of religious sites and faith that sustained our ancestors even during the hardest moments in history. 

You can choose a whole day for a fulfilling experience or opt for a shorter version of the route.

The itinerary: 

meeting at 9 o’clock in front of the Katzler Pavilion

– destination Old Town – the Chair and the Gloriette 

– entering the Old Town (the Star, “Zvijezda” in Croatian), Tijesna Street, the Town Museum, Strossmayer Square, the pharmacy

– the central square – Ban Josip Jelačić Square, the Holy Trinity Church, the Franciscan monastery, the Town Museum, St Nicholas Church 

– going back along King Tomislav Street – a story of Josif Stalin Street and the St Cyril and Methodius Church, the Edison cinema, Zorin dom, the music pavilion, Franjo Tuđman Promenade

– the Kupa river – a story of the synagogue and the Jewish quarter

13:00-15:00 lunchtime 

– Dubovac – St Joseph National Shrine and Our Lady of the Snows Church 

– the Dubovac historic cemeteries (Catholic, Jewish, Orthodox and military)

Seize the opportunity and join a free guided tour during the Karlovac Advent. In those 90 minutes, you’ll experience the town in its holiday season lights, but also learn a bit more about some interesting sites and locations. After a walk along the Promenade, you’ll participate in lighting the Advent candle at the town’s main square. Join us on Saturday, December 15 and 22, 2018.

The Military History Route

This military route through Karlovac is going to show you why Karlovac was founded in the first place and how it grew and developed in tumultuous times of wars and different armies. Throughout history, wars have made an indelible mark on the fates of towns and people. Karlovac was founded as a fortress to protect Europe from the conquering armies from the south. Due to its geographic location, it became a strategically important point in all the wars of the millennium. Wounded in various wars, never conquered and always at the frontier, in spite of being a military town, Karlovac nevertheless always managed to live a life of culture, parks, commerce and sports. 

The military tour offers an authentic experience of an unusual history, all the more so since its guide is a local who was actively involved in defending the town. Find out why the Music School is a part of the town’s military history, where Karlovac’s military spirit resides and how its cultural history was developed, in spite of all the wars.
